Sustainable Consumption

Welcome to our website on the sustainable consumption of coffee, cocoa & co.

We, a group of students from various degree programmes at the University of Passau, have set ourselves the goal of encouraging you to consume various products in a sustainable and fair way, and to provide you with the most important information. During the winter semester 2022/23, different teams have been working on the products coffee, cocoa, avocado, cashew, Brazil nut and soya.

In the winter semester 2023/24, we added pineapple, banana, cotton, palm oil, rice, tobacco, tea and sugar cane. For each product, short texts summarize information about the growing regions, cultivation and harvest, certifications and sustainability aspects when consuming the end product. We also provide an overview of some labels and certifications for the products mentioned.

The website was created in the context of the advanced seminar ‘Coffee, Cocoa & Co: How sustainable are cultivation and consumption?’, supervised by Prof Dr Schmitt. The project is to be continued and expanded in the following semesters.

The contents are currently being translated into different languages by students of the Language Centre of the University of Passau. Several products have appeared in English, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese; other products and languages will follow suit. Please be patient. In the meantime, please refer to the German version.
